There are several factors which govern the usefulness of meetings including size, differences in seniority, how far the functional roles determine the part which an individual plays and whether there are established structures for conducting the meeting.

People are expected to conduct excellent meetings but their reputation can be undermined by failing to manage a meeting well or by holding too many or too few meetings. Attending a meeting may allow escape from the dull office routine, open up social connections and enhance personal status in the organisation.

People are, however, attracted to meetings like bees to a honey pot and where the numbers invited exceed the desired figure, effectiveness is compromised.

The model used in the workshop demonstrates how as we move from certainty to uncertainty, i.e. into a more complex situations in a meeting and different parameters begin to operate. It will help delegates understand both where to intervene and what difficulties they might encounter.
