Doing IIP the Belbin way
What makes a team work? Many management gurus have developed their ten magic hallmarks for teamwork which work for some teams but not others: The IIP standard is a more rigorous framework that has been tested over 20 years with hundreds of thousands of teams and stands up to close scrutiny in any group.
So we have a blue print for understanding what makes teams work. Ten uses Belbin’s ideas about team roles, work roles and meeting structures to invigorate this framework. For example the standard says there needs to be a strategy for improving the performance of the organisation. We can unlock this statement by:
- Analysing the balance of team roles in the mangement team
- Understanding their strengths and weaknesses
- Using this information to refresh the vision they are trying to create
A recent management team I worked with were full of specialists and were frustrated because they could not make decisions. Management teams can only be successful when they have understood what type of team they can be: analysing team roles will unlock this puzzle and help them communicate their strategy. We call this creating a team identity.
We then let the team tell their storey by developing a territory map. This involves drawing a picture of how they want to work. Teams will expand their territory in good times and shrink it in bad times. Teams need to
- Understand their territory map
- Create a territory plan which will help them improve
We help them in this analysis by providing feedback from people who know them well through their team role assessments.
Our programme ten gives people eight other tools for developing their teams which have been designed world wide by Belbin consultants. It also enables them to meet the IIP standard in an exciting and invigorating way.
